In this latest body of work I take on the search for the relationship between natural phenomena and human constructs. Use
About the Artist:
Nature has always informed the artist in Carolynn Wood, compelling her to create art whose materials remind us of its source and original purpose, while its forms are reminiscent of how we shape our world. Carolynn asks that her work actively carry a sense of the beauty of both world views. All shapes structural, have fascinated the artist since childhood. Using willow as a structural entity, allows her to freely explore these shapes. She has found they have a language and a voice.
A regard for the lightness of the art's environmental footprint has guided her in the choice of materials.
The artist has had a previous career in art, but also has backgrounds in architecture and public radio. She is a native of Colorado.
About The Work:
The sculptures make use of many materials found in nature and in their organic state, yet there is an architectural quality and a structural integrity that often informs the observer. Willow branches, stones, paper are transformed into sculptural constructions that are mindful of bridges, conveyances, emotions. The sculptures may improbably balance or precariously out stretch a symbol of promise, Escher-like moments in willow may remind one that; the unexpected, is probable.
Happily, the pieces are compatible with a surprising variety of style and art, be they oriental, contemporary, southwest, post modern or eclectic/nouveau. This art stands on its own, and plays well with others. The dynamic play of shadow cast by these sculptures is a facet of the art that is individual to each piece and placement.
The artist sees the strong architectural and interior design possibilities, and welcomes discussion of idea driven projects of ‘organic’ materials, such as willow branches, petrified wood or an egg to manufacture structurally sophisticated sculptures defines the dichotomy between living in a natural world and one informed by the impact of the human mind at work. I explore the dynamics of why we build bridges; is it a simple spanning of distance or an extension of hope? Can sculptures with structural integrity actually inform us about our sense of stability? Have intangibles, such as balance, deflection or tensile strength an influence on the emotions? These queries have led me to be as interested in the spaces not taken by the materials as the shapes created by them.
These multi-medium, free-standing or wall mounted pieces are using ‘humble’ materials in forms I would describe as original. They ‘play well’ with other styles be that contemporary, southwest, eastern or nouveau eclectic. That these pieces have a peaceful aspect to them is derived from seeing beauty as part of the whole.
