Painting, like life, is a constant challenge.  To balance spontaneity with the need for order is an intricate practice.  I must allow a line to begin strong and stated and then become so subtle it almost disappears without over thinking the process.  It is important to appreciate how beauty in a unique color popping out in a totally unplanned place allows me to let go of the need to control while maintaining attention to detail.  Through paint, I am constantly learning.

Mixed media had been my passion since I first began painting in the 1970’s.  Recently, after seeing work by Cezanne, I fell in love with painting with oil.  The richness of colors that can be achieved by continually mixing paint, the viscosity of the oil that develops contrast of textures, the layering of paint leaving hints of what is beneath has inspired my infatuation.

My work begins with a concept: a political event loaded with irony, a poem that expresses a belief so perfectly, music that delights my soul.  Often an image appears out of my rough sketch that takes on a voice of its own.  Recently I have been confronting two themes: the beauty in stillness and the broken man.  In stillness, I observe of the seasons of life, learn patience, accept changes and gain strength.  These lessons parallel painting with oil.
